(February 13, 2015, Los Angeles) – CARECEN Los Angeles announces it is ready to process applications for the expanded Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program beginning February 18, when the federal government expects to release the application form. Those who qualify can apply at CARECEN headquarters in Pico Union.
“When the programs were announced, we knew many people would benefit and would need services as well as information,” said Martha Arevalo, Executive Director of CARECEN Los Angeles. “For CARECEN, the DACA expansion is a valuable opportunity to provide more and better services to our community.” Since DACA began in June 2012, people without status who arrived in the U.S. before age 16, were in school or had graduated from high school or college, had not turned 31 by June 15, 2012 and had lived continuously in the U.S. since June 15, 2007 could qualify for protection from deportation and a work permit for up to two years. On November 20, 2014, President Obama announced a series of administrative actions that, among other things, modified the DACA requirements: it removed the upper age limit for those who otherwise qualified for DACA, changed the continuous residence date to Jan. 1, 2010, and made the work permit valid for three years. Applications for this extension of DACA begin February 18, and CARECEN will process them, as it did with the original DACA program.
